How to protect your privacy on Facebook

Both Playboy and Will Ferrell now are the latest big names to delete their accounts as fallout continues from Facebook’s privacy scandal.

Lawsuits continue to emerge from users, investors and advertisers after data of more than 50 million users were obtained by British data firm, Cambridge Analytica.

As Facebook works to solve privacy problems, the question remains, how can you protect yourself?

Officials say Facebook is able to get information about you based off of almost everything you do on the social media site.

If you start combing through the “Settings” portion of your Facebook, you may be surprised to find out how much the social media giant knows about you.

Users can do this by going to the settings tab, clicking “Ads” and then “Your Information.”

If you click on the heart icon, it shows your different interests. Officials say the results could show information about your political affiliation and other personal information.

Officials also say you can also go to “Settings” and download your Facebook log. This will give users a file of everything from contact numbers, events you attended, and your ad history.

While all of this may seem scary, officials say there is a way to control some of the information getting out to companies.

Go to the settings tab and then click on “Apps.” This shows all the apps you’ve signed on to with Facebook. Users can adjust the settings or just delete the apps altogether.

Officials say the things you’ve done in the past are still out there. However, they say making changes now can at least help limit the info you’re putting out there going forward.

Officials say in the coming weeks, Facebook will make it easier to monitor your privacy.
