Beauty vlogger James Charles has been part of his fair share of scandals. Most notably, perhaps, is the time he was forced to apologize after his derogatory tweet about Africa and Ebola. Now, he’s calling out Ariana Grande for unfollowing him over that exact same tweet.
On Friday, Charles uploaded a video of himself getting his makeup done by fellow YouTubers Shane Dawson and Ryland Adams. At the 11-minute mark of the video, Dawson asks Charles who’s the “rudest celebrity” he’s ever met. Without pause, the makeup artist answers, “Ariana Grande.” He then begins to recap what he calls a “really crappy experience” with the pop star.

It all started when Charles went to one of Grande’s shows in Los Angeles. After he posted several videos from the night, he says she DM’ed him to thank him for coming. “She was so sweet,” he says in the video. “I was like, ‘I love you the most ever in the world!’ Just saying, I don’t have any hard feelings about it, I think she’s so talented. But, she followed me and DMed me…She was like, “I wish I knew you were coming, like, I would have loved to have you backstage.”
At this point, however, Charles had already made his offensive joke about Africa and Ebola. “This is right after, like, all my scandals started happening, so I was getting, like, a bunch of really angry tweets from her fans that were really mad that she had followed me,” he continued. “And literally four hours later, I started getting tweets being like, ‘Wow, Ariana unfollowed James, the rat gets what he deserves,’ like, ‘Wow, love karma.'”
Confused, Charles checked back and saw that indeed, he had been unfollowed by Ariana Grande “literally three hours” after she had first followed him. “I messaged her back, and I was like, ‘Hey, did I do something wrong?’ And she literally was like, ‘Hey babe, I saw a lot of angry tweets from my fans and I would never want to disappoint them, so I unfollowed.'”
According to Charles, he then sent her a message saying something along the lines of, “You have a hundred million fans, it’s really disappointing that you would, like, stoop to the level of listening to people bullying me, just to, like, appease them, but okay.'”
And that’s the story of how James Charles came to consider Ariana Grande as the “rudest celebrity” he’s ever met. Ariana Grande has yet to comment on this non-scandal, and neither party has made any receipts public.
