Litchfield student wins cabbage-growing contest
LITCHFIELD – Kelsey Sweet, a student at St. Francis of Assisi School, was named the New Hampshire state winner of the 2016-2017 national Bonnie Plants’ Third Grade Cabbage Program.
Sweet, who grew a 19-pound cabbage, was randomly selected by the N.H. Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food from among New Hampshire’s school-level winners.
She will receive a $1,000 scholarship in the form of a savings bond from Bonnie Plants for her education.
The Alabama-based company created the program to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people.
Each year, Bonnie Plants trucks free oversized cabbage plants to third-grade classrooms whose teachers have signed up for the program. At the end of the growing season, teachers select the student who has grown the “best” cabbage, based on size and appearance. A digital image of the student with the cabbage is submitted online to the company, and the student’s name is entered in a statewide drawing. State winners, who are randomly selected by each state’s agriculture department, each receive the scholarship.
This year, the company said, more than 1 million third-graders in the 48 contiguous states participated, growing colossal cabbages with the hopes of winning “best in state.”

New England Brass to perform in schools
NORTH CONWAY – Arts Jubilee will present the annual Music in the Schools program in partnership with the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire on Thursday and Friday in elementary schools throughout the Greater Mount Washington Valley.
Josiah Bartlett, Freedom, Madison and Pine Tree elementary schools are among those participating.
Arts Jubilee brings a performer or performing group to schools each year to offer an enriching experience for students. “The Arts Jubilee Board of Directors considers it both an honor and a responsibility to provide this cultural exposure for our local kids,” the group wrote in an email.
This year’s performance will be by New England Brass, a chamber music group that has been performing for more than three decades. In addition to adult programming, New England Brass entertains and educates more than 20,000 schoolchildren a year throughout New England.
The group’s two-day residency will culminate with a public performance at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Loynd Auditorium at Kennett High School in Conway. Tickets for the performance, coordinated by the Arts Alliance, are $5 for students, $10 for adults and $20 for families. Discounted tickets are available if preordered online at www.aannh.org ($3 for students, $8 for adults and $15 for families).
