Creative In Conversation: Fashion Designer Anna October
Ukraine-born Anna October founded her eponymous label in 2010. As evident in her line, Anna has a background in tailoring with each piece designed to flatter and enhance the female form. Delicate in nature and in color palette her collection is just the right mix of bold and romantic.
Pre-Summer ’18 Collection
What was your first fashionable memory? My very first memory was an article about Jean Paul Gaultier, he was the first fashion designer I discovered when I was 8 and since that I decided to be a fashion designer. Also, my stylish mother, she was wearing her 3 favorite colors, red, black and lavender and was always in a 3 pieces costume and an elegant hat. She became my vision of a lady.
Pre-Summer ’18 Collection
How did you get into the industry? I wanted to be a designer from an early age – at the age of 16 I would make dresses and sell them to my friends. At the same time, I was studying pattern cutting and tailoring and later took fine art courses. At the age of 19 I was living in Odessa and studying the fine art. This was the same year I made my first capsule collection and was contacted by the buyers who wanted to buy it for their concept store in Kiev, then I also started to work with a concept store Ra in Antwerp, so it was quite a fast start.
Who were the first supporters of your brand? The first supporter was my mother- she never knew what fashion design means and how it can evolve but was supporting my dream. Also my friends and their parents; I remember how a father of a friend of mine gave me 500 dollars for my first collection I was making for a contest, I was just 15 and he beleived in my potential, we are good friends. I remember how Rebecca, who was a buyer for Browns, first saw the collection and bought it straight away – it was a great start of new great story and business growth for me.
Pre-Summer ’18 Collection
Sum up the aesthetic of your pre-fall collection… In this collection, Anna October lady is at ease with herself. She looks rich as Capote’s swan, confident as American feminist artist, feminine as Parisian demimonde at the days when women spent hours in the dressing room.
Pre-Summer ’18 Campaign
Tell us about your silhouettes? Do you have any signatures? I love to reconstruct vintage styles from the past decades and approach color as a modernist artist did, aiming to create timeless and cinematically feminine pieces to want, love and wear round-the-clock. I love when its flowing, breathing and full of enjoyment. This is my signature.
