Happy April Fool’s Day. Maybe.
For some, the pranking holiday is a raucous good time, and for others who hate pranking, it’s just one of those days you have to get through.
Whether you’re looking for inspiration or a few laughs, we rounded up five movies and TV shows available to stream that will get you into the April Fool’s spirit. We’re not pranking you. We swear.
If you were the architect of your senior prank: National Lampoon’s Animal House
The quintessential college comedy is full of many high jinks, but one of the most memorable scenes is the one where a misbegotten prank ends with a dead horse. Animal House embodies the spirit of April Fool’s Day. The entire movie is, essentially, a prank on the idea of college itself.
Stream it on HBO Go/Now.
If you like goofy, dumb heroes: Super Troopers
Like Animal House, Super Troopers is a fantastic parody film that includes some well-placed pranks. (Remember the high-speed chase?) The story of well-intentioned if idiotic state troopers is surprisingly sweet for the raunchy comedy genre.
Stream it on Cinemax.
If you worship chaos: Jackass: The Movie
Sometimes you don’t want something sweet. Johnny Knoxville’s movie based on his MTV reality prank show falls on the mean-spirited side of pranking. The movie retains the cast of the series, including Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, Steve-O, Jason “Wee Man” Acuña and more, and includes dozens of small and large pranks.
Stream it on HBO Go/Now.
If you express your grudging affection through pranking: The Office
How many times did Jim (John Krasinski) prank Dwight (Rainn Wilson)? There was the classic office supplies in Jell-O; there was future Dwight; there was Asian Jim. Although Jim had some affection for his quirky desk mate, there was seemingly no end to the number of pranks he was ready to pull on Dwight over the workplace comedy’s nine seasons. Don’t try these at home (or work). You need a real expert to pull them off.
Stream it on Netflix.
If you prank without affection: Scrubs
Maybe, just maybe, the Janitor (Neil Flynn) liked J.D. (Zach Braff) just a little bit, but over the years on the medical comedy, it didn’t seem like it. The Janitor did anything and everything to make J.D.’s life miserable, much to the amusement of viewers. The best janitor pranks involved the whole hospital, like when everyone convinced J.D. that “jiggly ball” was a thing and then proceeded to pelt him with tennis balls.
Stream it on Hulu.
From family reunions to addictive dramas, here’s what’s coming to TV this spring.
