Proposing a plant-based lifestyle
DEAR EDITOR:
I would like to draw attention to all persons in the Telluride region to a scheduled meeting in the Wilkinson Library from 6-8 p.m. on Friday evening (March 29). A number of like-minded persons in our area would like to form a group of interested people in conjunction with a national movement called the Plant Pure Network.
This network emerged out of the 2015 film “Plant Pure Nation” with the goal of creating and supporting a grassroots movement by empowering a network of independent local groups and people to promote the benefits of a whole food, plant-based lifestyle. These pods, or groups, are under the umbrella of the nonprofit Plant Pure Communities. To date, over 45,000 people have signed up to participate. There are more than 460 groups across the globe. Participation is free and offers support and networking opportunities to everyone interested in learning, incorporating, advocating and practicing a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. People join pods to support one another and work together to spread the message of plant-based nutrition in their communities, as well as have fun and build relationships.
Pod members hopefully will choose to educate others in their community on the connections of a plant-based lifestyle to our health, the environment, farming, animal welfare, and food and health inequities. Although there are many reasons for the formulation of groups to promote these purposes, the partial impetus is a book by Dr. Colin Campbell called “The China Study.” I would highly recommend it to all persons as a crucial guideline to health and wellbeing.
The time has long since come in which we need to be conscious of our carbon footprint, and our own impact on the earth and all her creatures. With the alarming spike of population growth on the planet, and its impact on all things, it would behoove us to always consider our resources, air, water and food, and our unselfish relationship to our brothers and sisters. With regard to the unknown future of climate change, it would be wise to consider the necessity of making whatever adjustments we have the free choice of making in the way we live our lives and relate to others. Not only can we help ourselves beyond imagination, in both mind and body, but we can also help Mother Nature in a time that she needs it more than ever, by considering changes to our diet and lifestyle.
We hope to see you on the 29th for the first our meetings.
