Instagram celebrity Donald Robertson to hold book signing at Assouline

Donald Robertson, “the Andy Warhol of Instagram,” is coming to Palm Beach.

The 50-something illustrator and Estee Lauder creative director has become a celebrity, thanks to Instagram. His @drawbertson feed has attracted more than 200,000 followers with a stream of quirky cartoons of notables such as Anna Wintour, Kanye West and Karl Lagerfeld, photos of his young children and other images that strike his fancy.

Robertson uses “Instagram like a medium: collecting, cataloging and reacting to images he finds there,” according to his website.

His drawings have become collectibles. Fashionistas lined up to have him doodle on their handbags at Bergdorf Goodman. Beyonce posted a photo of herself holding a custom-made drawbertson handbag. Brands such as Smashbox and J. Crew have teamed up with him.

Robertson will sign copies of his monograph, Donald: The Book, at 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Assouline in the Royal Poinciana Plaza, 340 Royal Poinciana Way.

“I can’t wait to visit the new Assouline emporium and sign my book and hang with the Palm Beach locals,” Robertson said. Robertson’s family, including his Instagram celebrity twins, will be at the signing.

Robertson was clueless about Instagram until 2012, when an assistant, who noted his compulsive drawing habit, set him up with an account, according to Vanity Fair. He took to the platform like a felt tip pen to paper.

He was at Bergdorf Goodman when he spotted Assouline’s Valentino book, Vogue reported. Too impatient to wait for a book of his own, he started drawing on the books’ covers.

Prosper Assouline got wind of his antics and offered him a book deal. With 300 pages and more than 100 illustrations, Donald: The Book features a best-of lineup of his art along with handwritten notes and autobiographical tidbits.
