At the Movies: Monsters get slayed, Earth gets saved in week's new films
FAIRFIELD — “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is the sequel to the first global-spawning battle between monsters and machine.
In this film, Jake Pentecost, played by John Boyega, is the son of a legendary pilot who gave his life in a coup de grace against the monsters, but struggling with the aftermath. He falls into the world of crime only to be yanked out again when an even bigger threat comes to Earth.
Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert, played by Scott Eastwood, and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara, played by Cailee Spaeny, as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left.
The movie opens nationwide Friday with a PG-13 rating.
Also coming to theaters is “Midnight Sun,” in which 17-year-old Katie Price, played by Bella Thorne, is afflicted with a life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. Her world is the night, where she plays her guitar for travelers and meets Charlie, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger, whom she has secretly admired for years. The two embark on a touching and unique love affair.

“Sherlock Gnomes” is the animated mystery of missing gnomes in London. From the creators of “Gnomeo and Juliet,” children of all ages will enjoy the adventures of Sherlock and his friends. The film opens nationwide Friday and is rated PG.
“Unsane” is the first film to be shot entirely on an iPhone in two weeks by director Steven Soderbergh. It is the tale of a young woman placed in a mental institution where she must face her greatest fears, whether they are real or only in her head.

“Final Portrait,” which stars Geoffrey Rush and Armie Hammer and centers on the relationship between a writer and an art lover. The film is rated R.
“Getting Grace,” about a girl who is dying from cancer who wants to know what happens in the death process. So she crashes a funeral and ends up teaching the awkward funeral director about living life to the fullest. The film rated PG-13.
“I Kill Giants,” a movie based on a comic book of the same name. It is the tale of a girl, Barbara Thorson, played by Madison Wolfe, who escapes reality through retreating into her imaginary world where she fights giants. The film is not rated.
