Buzz Williams explains outburst that led to technical foul late in Alabama win over Virginia Tech

A huge moment in Alabama’s 86-83 win over Virginia Tech came with 48 seconds left.

With the Crimson Tide leading by four, Hokie Justin Robinson was whistled for his fifth foul on a close block-charge situation driving to the basket. Instead of a block on Herbert Jones, the Virginia Tech guard fouled out.

Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams flipped out when the call was made. Something flew from his hands in his instant reaction.

That drew an immediate technical foul. Williams explained his reaction after the game.

“I shouldn’t have had the towel in my hand, I think that made it look worse,” Williams said. “I thought it was a block. John Cal, who I’ve known forever was at the game. He told me later that it was the charge. So, he said it was the right call.”

Sexton made one of the two technical free throws on the other end. He went 8-for-10 from the line in the final 1:06 to help seal the win. Had it been a block, the Hokies would have had two free throws to cut it to two.

Alabama (20-15) moves on to play East Regional top seed Villanova at 11:10 a.m. CT Saturday in Pittsburgh.
