“Father! The sleeper has awakened!” Sorry, I just can’t resist quoting that line anytime I write about the movie Dune. Maybe the same impulse has occurred to director Denis Villeneuve, who reportedly now envisions remaking Dune as at least two films.
AVClub.com reports that Villeneuve told a crowd in Montreal last week that “Dune will probably take two years to make. The goal is to make two films, maybe more.”
The original Dune movie was released in 1984 and was written and directed by David Lynch. It starred Kyle MacLachlan as a leader in the battle over the desert planet Arrakis – the only source of a material (“the spice”) that allows for space travel. The film was based on the novel by Frank Hebert. The story spawned sequels, short stories, comic books and TV adaptations. But that first movie? Oof! Not even the soundtrack by Toto and Brian Eno could safe it from box office disaster.
Villeneuve, however, seems like the right director at the right time. His sequel to Blade Runner – Blade Runner 2049 – generally pleased sci-fi fans.
The director has often said he envisions a Dune remake as being a Star Wars movie for adults.
“Most of the main ideas of Star Wars are coming from Dune so it’s going to be a challenge to [tackle] this,” Villeneuve told an interviewer earlier this year. “The ambition is to do the Star Wars movie I never saw.”
