Stranger Things' Duffer Brothers respond to claims of verbally abusing female crew members
Stranger Things creators, the Duffer brothers, have been accused of verbally abusing female crew members.
Atlanta-based grip Peyton Brown took to Instagram on International Women’s Day to announce that after working on the first two seasons of the show, she would not be involved with season three due to an “unhealthy work environment.”
“I personally witnessed two men in high positions of power on that set seek out and verbally abuse multiple women,” Brown wrote in the post. “I promised myself that if I were ever in a situation to say something that I would. I have 11.5 thousand followers who can hear me say this, TIME IS UP.”
A commenter on the post later asked if Brown was referring to the Duffer Brothers and she confirmed that she was. She then elaborated on the alleged abuse, saying that the brothers threatened female crew, and alleging that the hostile environment led some members to quit.
She has since deleted the post but a screengrab was taken by Entertainment Tonight. You can see that and the comments below.
In a statement released to Variety, The Duffer Brothers have responded to the allegations, saying: “We are deeply upset to learn that someone felt uncomfortable on our set”.
“We think it is important not to mischaracterise our set, where we believe strongly in treating everyone fairly regardless of gender, orientation, race, religion, or anything else. We remain totally committed to providing a safe and collaborative working environment for everyone on our productions.”
Netflix renewed the show for a third season back in December, although they’ve yet to announce a release date. The Duffer Brothers had previously confirmed they were working on season three in interviews and it was only a matter of time before Netflix officially got on board.
Speaking to Collider, producer Shawn Levy said that the show is likely to be set a year after Season 2’s conclusion, so 1985. The Duffer Brothers also suggested that the new episodes will have to deal with the kids’ growing up and puberty.
