A new vintage store has opened in Staunton, new grants given to support Staunton nightlife and area wineries honored at the Governor’s Cup — here’s the buzz.

Vintage

A new vintage clothing store has opened in downtown Staunton, in what used to be the storefront for Sacred Circle.

Owner Mike Quayle first got into vintage clothing when his daughter was looking for a vintage wedding dress. From there started an entire adventure into the past.

Quayle opened the store Nanny June Vintage in November. The store is located at 112 E. Beverley St.

Previously, he worked at a psychiatric hospital in Washington state and recently relocated to Virginia for an early retirement. Quayle had lived in Harrisonburg, where his partner is from, prior to moving across the country.

But Staunton kept calling his name.

“We just really liked Staunton,” he said.

He starting selling vintage wedding gowns online, with places like Ebay. Then he opened his own Etsy shop and his vintage clothing closet grew. Then it was time for a storefront.

“A lot of vintage is timeless, a lot of it never goes out of style or it keeps recycling in style, which is kind of fun,” he said. “I just started getting more and more interested and started collecting thousands of pieces.”

His shop features gowns, dresses (both formal and not so formal), jewelry, shoes and even a men’s section. He picks pieces from estate sales, warehouse sources and he even travels to find vintage pieces. He’s got the hook-up, he knows a lot of vintage sellers that they exchange or buy pieces from.

The name of the shop is named after his grandmother (Nanny) and his partner’s grandmother (June).

“I just kind of wanted to something to remember them and name it after them,” he said. “They were both people who liked clothing and like to dress up for occasions. It just felt like a way to honor them and remember them.”

The shop gives him a sense of freedom and he loves being part of a new-to-him community. He gives big credit to his employee Alex Osherowitz for helping him get the store off the ground.

“I just love meeting the people,” he said. “People will come in and they’ll see something and they’ll have a story. I love hearing the stories about their family or grandma who dressed in a certain way and how it makes them think of that. It’s been fun to get to know the other downtown merchants, too.”
