Come March 12, teams will be allowed to “legally tamper” with free agents. From there, on March 14, those players can sign their deals.
In the days leading up to these two events, we will hear plenty of rumors pertaining to all kinds of things.
Whether it’s someone being cut, a cap casualty, a trade or which team is interested in who.
As of now, there are four rumors that stand out.
Let’s check them out, starting with current Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Cousins Unlikely to Receive Third-Straight Franchise Tag
According to John Keim of ESPN.com, the Redskins “don’t plan” to use the franchise tag on Cousins.
Keim also reported what Redskins senior vice-president of player personnel Doug Williams said about the situation:
“I don’t think so. But it’s not too late. But we haven’t really talked about that. The media had come up with those scenarios more than what we’ve talked about it because I can’t remember one meeting where we talked about the possibility of tagging him.”
As Keim also noted, if the Redskins were to apply the franchise tag to Cousins, it would be to try to swing a trade involving the six-year veteran.
Back in January, the Redskins agreed a trade for former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, all but spelling the end for Cousins in Washington.
New England Patriots Tight End Rob Gronkowski Expected to Play in 2018
It sounds like Gronk forming a tag team with his buddy and WWE superstar Mojo Rawley will have to be put on hold for a bit.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Gronk is expected to suit up for the Pats in 2018, despite taking some time to ponder his future.
Rapoport cited Hollywood and WWE as potential “venues” he could have pursued should he have decided to hang up the cleats.
With Gronk back, Brady will head into his 19th season with his most valuable weapon in tow.
Broncos Trying to Deal For Redskins’ Cravens
After sitting out 2017 following a retirement announcement that ultimately landed him on the reserve list, Redskins safety Su’a Cravens is making headlines in the form of a potential trade.
According to Rapoport, the Denver Broncos are in talks to try to take Cravens away from the Redskins.
Cravens has only played in 2016, the year he was drafted.
Equipped with Justin Simmons and Darian Stewart at the safety position, the Broncos will look to shore up their secondary even more with the talented Cravens.
There’s no word yet on potential compensation.
The Broncos secondary will be even more deadly to opposing offenses in 2018 should they add Cravens to the fold.
Dez Bryant Out In Dallas?
In the wake of finding out that Dez basically caught it, it sounds like he could be needing to catch on with another team here in 2018.
According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Cowboys and executive vice-president Stephen Jones have had no talks with wide receiver Dez Bryant or his agent to discuss restructuring his contract.
Archer also reported that head coach Jason Garrett has not yet had any “specific personnel meetings about any players yet.”
This is quite interesting considering the pedigree of Bryant with the team. However, as Archer wrote, the Cowboys have a few options: Pay him $12.5 million and have him count $16.5 million against the cap, get him to restructure or cut him.
Going off of his numbers in recent years, Bryant may not be worth that kind of price tag to the team.
It sounds more real than ever that Bryant could be playing elsewhere in 2018.
